French President Sarkosy acting for the time being as the European President, is in Moscow today to promote its interim resolution for the conflict in Georgia, wich was rejected last night behind close doors at the Security Council of UN by Russia.
French Foreign Affairs Minister Bernard Kouchner yesterday presented the three points proposal in Moscow:
Immediate cease fire, recognition of Georgia sovereignty and statu quo ante.
Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili’s decision to order a full-scale assault on South Ossetia in the first place jeopardise his capacity to maintain its sovereignty in the two dissent provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, Lavrov the foreign Minister of Russia stated; ”Saakashvili’s ‘barbaric and brutal action’ in the province of South Ossetia has caused Russia to have ‘no trust’ in the current leadership of Georgia and the only way to resolve the crisis in the Caucasus would be through a total Georgian withdrawal from South Ossetia.
“The only way this can end… is with the withdrawal of Georgian forces so that they are not in South Ossetia, are not in a position to attack South Ossetia and agree not to use force there,” Lavrov said.
“Our foreign partners have done nothing to force Tbilisi, to use their influence with Tbilisi, for the signature of a legally-binding document” on renunciation of force, Lavrov said.
Georgia launched a major offensive on Friday against the independence-seeking province of South Ossetia.
Russia, the main ally of South Ossetia, responded by sending in armed convoys and military combat aircraft. Most South Ossetians hold Russian citizenship.
If Western Countries do not agree to sit at tthe table with Russia, it will be impossible to have a control back-up plan to have oil via pipelines if the Hormuz Straight is shut down.
